In a high frequency sewing machine, feed dogs producing synthetic horizontal and vertical movements cooperate with a presser foot to intermittently transfer a workpiece mounted on a mounting plate. While the workpiece is not transferred, high frequency power having a predetermined value is applied between a pair of planar electrodes, so that a thermoplastic resin tape held between overlapped portions of a fiber cloth in the workpiece is melted under dielectric heating, thereby bonding together the overlapped portions of the fiber cloth. On the other hand, while the workpiece is transferred, high frequency power having a value smaller than while the workpiece is not transferred, is applied between the planar electrodes. This ensures uniform bonding strength, and also prevents occurrence of a defective portion, such as burn or a burn hole. Additionally, curved portions or stretchable fiber clothes can be satisfactorily and efficiently bonded together. |
