PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize a hydraulic tensioner while improving operation responsiveness on occurrence of oil pressure, in a hydraulic tensioner which includes: a plunger, which presses a transmission band, supported on a tensioner housing so as to be movable in the axial direction, and one end of which faces the oil chamber for the plunger; and a lock mechanism, which is arranged in the tensioner housing to enable the return side movement of the plunger to be restrained by engaging with the plunger. SOLUTION: The plunger 36 includes: a cylindrical body 49, which is formed into a cylindrical shape so as to enable the lock mechanism 53 to engage with an outer circumferential surface and one end of which faces the oil chamber 48 for the plunger; and a piston 50, which is fitted to the cylindrical body 49 so as to be slidable relatively while its return side movement to the cylindrical body 49 is restrained and one end of which faces the oil chamber 48 for the plunger.
