The method involves standing a parameter in connection with temperature of a catalyst or an exhaust gas probe. An operation period is detected and cumulatively stored after standing the parameter with the temperature, where the aging condition of the catalyst and/or the exhaust probe is closed. The catalyst is provided as a three-way catalyst or an oxidation catalyst or a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a temperature detector, particularly with data storage unit for an operating method; (2) a computer program for executing an operating method; and (3) a computer program product with a program code.
