PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus allowing a user to notice abnormality earlier in comparison with the prior art even in a laser diode whose laser beams are not detected by a BD sensor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image carrier formed of a cylindrical member to carry an image made of toner, on the peripheral surface, and an LD (laser diode) unit comprising a laser diode forming an electrostatic latent image on the surface of the image carrier with laser beams, and a photodiode for detecting the light quantity of the laser beams. The image forming apparatus further includes a voltage sensor for detecting the voltage of electric power output from the photodiode, and an abnormality determining means for determining the occurrence of abnormality to the LD unit when the voltage detected by the voltage sensor is outside a range of an upper limit threshold and a lower limit threshold.
