The disclosed near-field optical head comprises: a recording magnetic field generator for generating a recording magnetic field, which is disposed on the distal side of the direction of extension of a slider disposed facing the surface of a magnetic recording medium which rotates in a given direction; an optical waveguide for propagating a beam of light towards the magnetic recording medium; and a near-field light generation element for generating near-field light from the beam of light. Therein, at least one part of the recording magnetic field generator is formed so as to be coplanar with the near-field light generation element.
