[Also in Group XIII] Molten metals are separated from solution by cooling during passage through a trough or launder having cooling sections located therein, the metals being then passed to a quiescent body of the molten metal to complete the separation. Thus a solution obtained from the condensation of zinc vapour by shock chilling in a shower of molten lead may be separated into its component metals by cooling to a lower temperature above 418‹ C. Molten lead obtained from the separation is then returned to the zinc condenser. Fig. 1 shows a section of a cooling trough of sheet metal 4 having end flanges 5 for bolting a number of such sections together to form a trough of the required length. Detachable cooling jackets 2 are provided at the upper part of the trough, the lower part having a heat-insulating layer 3 of cement which may be extended as a thin layer 3a between the cooling jacket and the sheet steel of the trough. The level of molten metal in the trough and therefore the amount of cooling to which it is subjected is controlled, e.g. by a weir or mainspade with fine adjustment by a T-spade at the outlet end of the trough. Fig. 2 shows a trough receiving molten metal by pump 17 from the sump of a zinc condenser. After cooling the metal flows into separating tank 8 in which, while flowing slowly round partition 10, it forms an upper layer of zinc, which flows into tank 14, and a lower layerof lead which flows under baffle 11 and back into the zinc condenser.
