PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic (EC) composition capable of retaining a gap between electrodes only by performing pattern formation according to coating without separately forming a spacer; and to provide an EC element using the electrochromic composition. SOLUTION: The EC composition 5 includes: a compound that develops and vanishes color in accordance with an electrochemical oxidation/reduction reaction; a support electrolyte; a thixotropic agent; a solvent; and an insulation particle.
