PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking device and a braking method of a passenger conveyor, which prevents reduction in operation efficiency and convenience, by continuing, without stopping operation of the passenger conveyor, when a safety device fails, by discriminating whether operation of the safety device is normal operation or not. SOLUTION: This braking device of the passenger conveyor includes a driving machine for driving the operation of the passenger conveyor and an inverter for changing a rotating speed of the driving machine, and includes the safety device for outputting a stopping command of the effect of stopping the operation of the passenger conveyor, and a control means for gently stopping the operation of the passenger conveyor by reducing the rotating speed of the driving machine by controlling the inverter when the stopping command output from the safety device is continuously input for a predetermined stopping determining time or more.
