PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of estimating the amount of attached toner, while suppressing increase in a circuit scale. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a generating means (a decompressing section 60) for generating for each line after a reference line, line data by applying a difference between the line data of the preceding line and the line data of this line to the line data of the preceding line; a first counting means (dot-counting section 63) for counting the numbers of dots formed on a recording medium, on the basis of line data; a second counting means (dot-counting section 63) for counting pixels that differ in the presence/absence of dots formed between the pixels, at identical position orthogonal to the line of the line data of the preceding line of pixels constituting the line data; an estimating means (CPU) for estimating the amount of toner attached to the recording medium on the basis of the counted dots and the total of the pixels counted for each line.
