PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging device easily imaging a front face photograph of an animal, and appropriately imaging a still image correctly focused on the face of an animal without manually performing a complicated setting operation by a user, and an image imaging method. SOLUTION: In imaging an image by a pet recognition mode, a process of detecting a face region of a pet being an object from image data to which average differential filtering is executed is performed. When the face region of the pet is detected, focus is emphasized on the face region of the pet by increasing a shutter speed, and an image of the pet is imaged as a still image, alternatively the image of the pet is imaged as a still image by increasing the aperture value, or only expansion of the image by digital zooming is permitted while prohibiting expansion of the image by optical zooming in the pet recognition mode.
