MECHANISM FOR DIVIDING TISSUE IN A HEMOSTAT-STYLE Abstract Open electrosurgical forceps (100) for sealing tissue are provided which include 5 first and second shaft portions (110, 120) pivotally associated with one another. Each shaft portion (110, 120) has a jaw member (132, 134) disposed at a distal end (114, 124) thereof. Each of the jaw members (132, 134) includes an electrically conductive sealing surface (132a, 134a) adapted to communicate electrosurgical energy through tissue held therebetween and a slot formed through the sealing surface (132a, 134a) thereof. The 10 forceps (100) includes a cutting mechanism (140) operatively associated with the first and second jaw members (132, 134). The cutting mechanism (140) includes a cutting element (144) disposed within the slot of the at least one jaw member (132, 134), the cutting element (144) being movable from a first position wherein the cutting element (144) is retracted within the at least one jaw member (132, 134) and a second position in which is the cutting element (144) at least partially projects from a sealing surface of the at least one jaw member (132, 134).
