PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a name search device using a handwriting recognition search, which facilitates searching for various names by effectively utilizing an input method of handwritten input when searching various names from a database and sequentially efficiently and accurately displaying following characters from the first input recognition character. SOLUTION: User's handwritten input is detected and is recognized to display a plurality of recognition candidates. When the user selects an arbitrary character, this character is determined as a defined recognition character. Next, names including this defined recognition character are searched from a name database, and if characters as a search result exist, the character is stored as a defined name component character 1. The plurality of characters as the search result are displayed, and a character selected and indicated by the user is stored as the next defined facility name component character, and names including both of the defined facility name component characters are searched to display a plurality of candidates in the pertinent order of probability. The next name component character is defined by user's selection and indication, and the same processing is performed, whereby a character which the user desires is defined.
