PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably form images by suppressing minute vibration (chattering) or turning-up of a cleaning blade, even if a coating layer of a transfer material adheres to an intermediate transfer body. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the intermediate transfer body 106; a secondary transfer roller 108 configured to transfer a toner image carried on the intermediate transfer body 106 to the transfer material P; and the cleaning blade configured to remove the residual toner on the intermediate transfer body 106 after the transfer process, wherein the image is formed on the transfer material P. The image forming apparatus also includes a control means 50 configured to control the rotational speed of the intermediate transfer body 106 based on the presence or absence of the coating layer of the transfer material P. When the contact area of the intermediate transfer body 106 with the transfer material passes through a portion abutting on the cleaning blade upon image formation on the transfer material P having the coating layer on the surface thereof, the control means 50 is configured to rotate the intermediate transfer body 106 at a second rotational speed A higher than a first rotational speed B used upon passage of the non-contact area of the intermediate transfer body 106 with the transfer material through the portion abutting on the cleaning blade.
