PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starting system, easily releasing a handle body from a starting shaft, when the starting shaft is reversely rotated. SOLUTION: The engine starting system 2 includes a start handle 21, and a reverse rotation stop device 22. In the reverse rotation stop device 22, a reverse rotation detection mechanism has a first one-way clutch 222D constituted to be capable of idling in a start rotation direction and not to be capable of idling. The reverse rotation release mechanism is a second one-way clutch 223 disposed between a mounting shaft 212 and a handle body 213, and constituted to be capable of idling in the start rotation direction and not to be capable of idling in the reverse rotation direction. The second one-way clutch 223 transmits torque of the handle body 213 to the mounting shaft 212 when the handle body 213 rotates in the start rotation direction, and on the other hand, cuts off the torque transmitted from the mounting shaft 212 to the handle body 213 when the start shaft 23 is reversely rotated.
