Detergent compositions comprise (1) a water-soluble chloride, bromide, sulphate, nitrate or acetate of a polyvalent metal, and (2) a compound of the formula RO(CH2CH(R1)O)nSO3M, where R is a branched alkyl or an alkylaryl radical of at least 10 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or methyl, n is 1-8 and M is a monovalent cation, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium or an alkylamine or hydroxyalkylamine. Specified salts of polyvalent metals are the chlorides, sulphates, nitrates, bromides and acetates of magnesium, calcium, aluminium and iron, and mixtures thereof. Suitable compounds of the formula above are obtained by condensing a branched-chain aliphatic alcohol of at least 10 carbon atoms, e.g. an alcohol obtained by the oxo process, or an alkylphenol having at least 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, and esterifying the product with sulphuric acid; a number of alcohols and phenols from which suitable products are obtainable are specified. The proportion of polyvalent metal salt may be 5-50 per cent, based on the weight of the sulphated alkylene oxide condensation product. Examples are given.
