Esters of para-chlor-gamma-phenyl butyric acid having boiling-points above 280 DEG C. are used as plasticizers for thermoplastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride, acetate or chloracetate, polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylates, copolymers of vinyl or vinylidene chloride with vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, acrylates or methacrylates; cellulose nitrate and benzyl cellulose. The alcoholic component of the ester may be 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,10-decanediol, di-, tri- or tetra-ethylene glycol, 2-ethyl hexanol, dodecyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, glycerine, butanetriol, trimethylol propane, hexanetriol, pentaerythritol, or the monobutyl or monopara-chlorphenyl ether of ethylene glycol. The plasticizers may be incorporated with the thermoplastic materials directly, or with solutions or dispersions thereof.ALSO:Para-chlor-gamma-phenyl butyric acid may be prepared by reaction of chlorbenzene and butyrolactone in the presence of FriedelCrafts' catalysts. The acid may be esterified in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon such as toluene or benzene or a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon such as ethylene chloride, and an esterification catalyst such as paratoluenesulphonic acid, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, naphthalene sulphonic acid or an acid-reacting ion-exchange compound. The alcoholic component of the ester may be 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,10-decanediol, di-, tri- or tetra-ethylene glycol, 2-ethyl hexanol, dodecyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, glycerine, butanetriol, trimethylolpropane, hexanetriol, pentaerythritol, or the monobutyl or monopara-chlorphenyl ether of ethylene glycol. |
