740,884. Temperature change detectors. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., WILKINSON SWORD CO., Ltd., and MATHISEN, A. June 27, 1952 [Aug. 3, 1951], No. 18440/51. Class 36. A temperature change detector comprises an inner conductor a separated from an outer conductor b by refractory insulating spacers distributed throughout its length and embedded in a glass filling c which is in intimate contact with the conductors. The glass may be assembled on the conductor a as short lengths of tubing spaced apart by ceramic beads f, which become embedded in the glass when it is softened. The cable may be made by securing one end of conductor a, carrying glass tube lengths c and ceramic beads f, to bracket 3a, the other end passing over roller 15 to weight 16. Conductor b is secured at one end to bracket 3b and at the other to clamp 13. The glass tube lengths and ceramic beads extend from bracket 3a to beyond the opposite end of conductor b, and pass between rollers 7 and 10. A burner 120 is placed near the bracket 3b to heat the assembly. As the glass softens, rollers 7 and 10 push additional tube lengths and ceramic beads into tube b, and trolley 19 carrying burner 120 is drawn along the assembly by motor 20 so that all the glass tube lengths are melted and fill the space between the conductors. A modified form of apparatus in which the conductor assembly is arranged vertically is also described both in this Specification and in Specification 740,960. |
