A method for the detection of hydrocarbon deposits in a location is disclosed comprising the steps of determining the concentration, at a site in the location or in an associated sample, of a first polynucleotide encoding a protein capable of metabolising a hydrocarbon, determining the concentration, at the same site in the location or in a sample, of a second polynucleotide encoding a protein capable of metabolising a hydrocarbon, and calculating a mathematical operation on the concentration of the first polynucleotide relative to the second polynucleotide, wherein the result of the mathematical operation indicates the presence or absence of a hydrocarbon deposit at the location, and wherein the first polynucleotide encodes a different protein to the second polynucleotide. The mathematical operation may include normalisation by calculating a ratio. The first and second polynucleotides may encode dioxygenases and monooxygenases, for example those encoded by the A1kB, Xy1M, or TQ1D genes. |
