734,998. Ammunition projectiles. SOC. ANON. BELGE DE MECANIQUE ET D' ARMAMENT. Aug. 19, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 22914/53. Class 9(1). The spin-stabilized projectile shown in Fig. 1 has an outer casing 1 within which is a coaxial casing 2 containing a hollow charge 3 with a metal liner 4. The casing 2 is centred in the outer casing by forward and rear bearings 10, 11 of an anti-friction alloy or graphite and two compartments 6, 7 at the base of the inner casing with communicating passages 8 are filled with a liquefiable substance e.g. paraffin wax. A plug 23 closes the base of the projectile, while the forward bearing 10 is mounted on an element 13, capping the hollow charge, and bears against an annular member 14, which is held in place by parts 15, 16 forming the nose of the shell. A percussion fuze 17 carrying a detonator 18 is screwed into the nose part 16. On impact, flash from the detonator 18 passes to a main detonator 19 which ignites a relay charge 3a to initiate the hollow charge. The compartment 6 is sealed peripherally by two rings 21 in grooves in the casing 2. A driving band is provided on the outer casing. In a modification, the cap element 13 is omitted and the base plug is rigidly connected to the inner casing, so that the propellant thrust is directly communicated to the inner casing, which is centred by ball-bearings instead of the bearing rings 10, 11. The nose part of the projectile may be milled to brake the gyration of the outer casing. |
