The area surrounding a vehicle is imaged, and physical objects in the area surrounding the vehicle are detected on the basis of the image which is taken. A driver is warned of the presence of the detected physical objects by the implementation of a warning display on an image which is being displayed. Therein, if the number of simultaneously detected physical objects does not exceed a specified number, a first warning display mode is carried out for each of the physical objects whereby the locations in which physical objects are present are highlighted. If the number of physical objects simultaneously detected by a detection means exceeds a specified number, the first warning display mode is not carried out, and a second warning display mode is carried out which implements a single specified highlighting of the entirety of the image being displayed. Thus, when many physical objects are detected, a display mode can be used which is clearer and easier to decipher for the driver than a display mode using individual highlighting.
