High molecular weight, isotactic, crystalline polymers of styrene are prepared in the presence of a catalyst produced by contacting a compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va, or VIa of the Periodic Table with a metal, alloy, metal hydride or organo metallic compound of Groups I, II or III, and as a solvent, a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon, aromatic cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon or nuclear halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon, which does not react with the catalyst. Benzene, toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene, cumene, tetrahydronaphthalene and chlorobenzene are used as solvents with, in examples, a titanium tetrachloride or trichloride and triethyl aluminium catalyst which is added portionwise to the agitated reaction mixture in an autoclave. The catalyst is decomposed by alcohol, the polymer powdered and treated with hot acetone and hydrochloric acid and isolated to form an isotactic, crystalline polystyrene.
|
