A system and method for providing access to or from a controlled space includes a device, a credential, a sensor, and a controller. The credential identifies or is associated with a user of the system and the device is configured to detect the credential. The sensor detects the presence of the user adjacent an entrance to or exit from the controlled space. The controller is responsive to both the device and the sensor to make an access decision prior to an attempt by the user to enter or exit the controlled space.
