Process for fabricating a friction component made of carbon/carbon composite material, comprises: obtaining a three-dimensional fibrous preform made of carbon fiber impregnated by a solution or suspension allowing a dispersion of refractory metal oxide particles on the fibers of the preform; forming of metal carbide by carboreduction by reaction of refractory oxide with fiber carbon by heat treatment; continuing heat treatment for transforming carbide into carbon by eliminating the metal; and compacting the preform by a matrix of carbon by chemical infiltration into gas phase.
