Disclosed is a light emitting device which is configured such that white light is obtained by mixing light from phosphors. Specifically disclosed is a light emitting device which comprises: a light emitting element that emits ultraviolet light or short-wavelength visible light having a peak wavelength within the wavelength range of 380-420 nm; a first phosphor which is excited by the ultraviolet light or short-wavelength visible light and emits visible light that has a peak wavelength within the wavelength range of 560-600 nm; a second phosphor which is excited by the ultraviolet light or short-wavelength visible light and emits visible light that is in a complementary color relation with the visible light emitted by the first phosphor; and a light transmitting member, which is a light transmitting layer that covers the light emitting element, and in which the first phosphor and the second phosphor are dispersed. The volume concentration of all the phosphors contained in the light transmitting member is 0.05-10 vol% (inclusive), and the light transmitting member is configured such that the optical path length from entrance of light into the light emitting element to exit to the outside is 0.4-20 mm (inclusive).
