In conventional multi-view stereoscopic image generation systems, complicated interpolation calculations from a multi-view original images are carried out in real time, and stereoscopic images must be generated, consuming a large amount of resources and requiring a highly specialised and expensive computer or the like. Furthermore, the inability to output or transmit the multi-view original images in a standard format is a major challenge for the diffusion of stereoscopic technology. By generating in advance an intermediate image which has the same resolution as a stereoscopic image that is the final output image, and which integrates pixels from each perspective, the generation of a stereoscopic image is possible by pixel arrangement conversion without using a high-speed and specialised computer or the like. Furthermore, if an intermediate image is used in which the image from each perspective is disposed in a tile shape, a completely new stereoscopic image generation system can be realised which generates a stereoscopic image from an intermediate image output or transmitted in a standard format by a standard image output device such as a Blu-ray player, an STB, or an image distribution server by using a simple, low-cost stereoscopic image generation device.
