PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer wherein a failure or an operation abnormality of a liquid level detection part for detecting an amount of ink in a tank, is detected in a simple method, and also to provide a method for detecting the abnormality thereof. SOLUTION: The air part of a second tank 39 is pressurized for a first period of time, in the state where first and second opening/closing means 53, 56 are closed, and first and second tanks 38, 39 are sealed. Then, the first and second opening/closing means 53, 56 are opened, and the first and second tanks 38, 39 are kept opened to the atmosphere for a second period of time.
