PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element and a method of manufacturing the display element, efficiently emitting generated light to the outside without applying damage to an organic EL layer. SOLUTION: Firstly, a transparent electrode protective material 11 is deposited on a first holding substrate 10, organic EL light-emitting elements (12, 13, 14) are manufactured on it in the same order as a conventional element example, sealing and holding are carried out by a sealing material 15 and a second holding substrate 16, and then, the first holding substrate 10 and the transparent electrode protective material 11 are removed by etching or the like. By removing the first holding substrate 10, deriving efficiency of light generated in the EL layer 13 is improved, and brightness and contrast of a display element are improved.
