PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-pressure mercury discharge lamp achieving, in a wide temperature range, higher light emitting efficiency that depends on the temperature of its coolest portion. SOLUTION: The low-pressure mercury discharge lamp includes rare gas and a light emitting metal filled in a discharge space 13 of a U-shaped air-tight container 11. At least 500W power is input thereto with such high current density that there is a relationship of IL/ϕin>0.05 between a lamp current IL and an inner diameterϕin of the air-tight container. In a space 281 which is communicated with the discharge space 13 at the U-shaped front end of the air-tight container 11 to serve as the coolest portion of the air-tight container 11 outside the discharge space, a capsule 28 is formed having a connection hole 282 in which an amalgam 30 can be held.
