Petroleum distillates which pass the B.S.I. copper strip corrosion test are prepared from distillates which fail to do so after hydrocatalytic desulphurization and redistillation, by adding a small proportion of a phenolic compound. Compounds referred to are tar acids from the distillation of coaltar, tricresol and sterically hindered phenols such as 2, 4 dimethyl-b -tertiary-butylphenol. Distillates referred to are solvent-naphthas.
