The method involves utilizing a radiate-optical sensor device (1) at a winding-up location or at a winder of a textile machine. Cross-section of a current thread (5) of a shading light barrier (3) is scanned continuously with a determined sample rate. Shading signals stored in a ring memory (6) are transferred from an evaluation unit (8) connected with a sensing unit to a memory device if a trigger light barrier (2) provides a shading signal, where size of the ring memory is variable. The size of the ring memory is proportional to velocity of the thread.
