The method involves detecting layers (14) of cutting goods in a work station or between work stations of a cutting machine (10) by a gripper that protrudes out from a transfer device. The layers are transported from a press station (20) and/or vibration station to a cutting machine via the transfer device, which comprises a gripper. A surface suction gripper (28) is utilized as the gripper, which sucks the layers at side surfaces. The surface suction gripper is set at the layers via a telescopic guide (42) and adjusted to the cutting machine for positioning the layers under a knife. An independent claim is also included for a cutting machine for cutting layers of the cutting goods.
