PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more promptly and highly accurately determine failure of restart compared to conventional cases, when an engine is restarted in accordance with a restart request, in an engine speed lowering period when the engine is stopped. SOLUTION: In the engine speed lowering period when the engine 21 is automatically stopped, failure of restart is assumed and engine speed is predicted. When the engine 21 is restarted in accordance with the restart request in the engine speed lowering period, a deviation between an engine speed detection value detected based on an output pulse interval of a crank angle sensor 25 and a predicted engine speed prediction value is compared with a predetermined determination threshold value, to determine whether or not the restart is failed.
