摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element having a multilayer structure with which workability is facilitated, which is capable of securing a filling amount of a liquid crystal and a satisfactory optical distance L and enhancing response speed and light transmittance and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element 100 having a multilayer structure includes a first unit element 10 formed so that a liquid crystal 40 may be encapsulated between a substrate 10a having a segment electrode and a substrate 10b having no electrode, a second unit element 20 formed so that the liquid crystal 40 may be encapsulated between a substrate 20a having no electrode and a substrate 20b having a common electrode and third unit elements 30 each formed so that the liquid crystal 40 may be encapsulated between substrates 30a and 30b having no electrode and the element 100 is formed by disposing and layering four third unit elements 30 between the first unit element 10 and the second unit element 20. An alignment direction of the liquid crystal of the first unit element 10 and upper two third unit elements 30 and an alignment direction of the liquid crystal of the second unit element 20 and lower two third unit elements 30 are mutually orthogonal to each other.
