The gear box i.e. axle gear box (1), has a gear wheel supported in a gear housing (2) and partially immersed into a lubricant sump (6) in a rest state. The gear wheel carries lubrication oil from the sump in an initial phase during rotation of the gear wheel. The carried oil is conducted into a separate lubricant reservoir (8) over a scraper (9) arranged adjacent to the gear wheel and conducted from the reservoir to locations of the gear box to be lubricated over lubrication oil channels. Retention chambers serve as lubricant reservoirs (12, 13) that are formed as plastic shells.
