<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive mechanism capable of outputting a driving force using a drive source of comparatively low driving force, and an image forming apparatus incorporating the drive mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: The drive mechanism includes the drive source for generating the driving force; an input element for inputting the driving force; an output element for outputting the driving force; a shaft for supporting the input element and the output element rotatably; a ratchet mechanism for connecting the input element to the output element to rotate them integrally when the input element is rotated in a first rotating direction by the driving force, and separating the input element from the output element when the output element is rotated in the first rotating direction; and an energizing member for energizing the input element separated from the output element, toward the output element.
