PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent peel resistance and abrasion resistance in high-speed cutting. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool has (a) a Ti compound layer as a lower layer, (b) anα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer as an intermediate layer, and (c) a Zr-containingα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer having a flat polygonal and elongate grain structure as an upper layer, which are vapor-deposition-formed on the surface of a tool body. The intermediate layer and the upper layer of a rake face and a cutting blade are made of theα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer and the Zr-containingα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer with a high (0001) plane orientation ratio, respectively. In addition, the inside of a crystal grain occupying 60% or more of an area ratio among crystal grains in the upper layer of the rake face and the cutting blade is divided by a crystal lattice interface comprising at least one or more constitutive atom shared lattice point forms expressed byΣ3.
