PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing adjuster miniaturizable by increasing a phase conversion angle. SOLUTION: This valve timing adjuster 10 includes a housing 12 and a vane rotor 20. Advance-angle grooves 65-68 allowing advance-angle passages 35-38 and advance-angle chambers 55-58 to communicate with each other, respectively, and retard-angle grooves 61-64 allowing retard-angle passages 31-34 and retard-angle chambers 51-54 to communicate with each other, respectively, are provided to the radial inside slidable contact surfaces 41-44 of the shoes 14-17 of the housing 12, respectively. The advance-angle grooves 65-68 are provided to the rear plate 11 sides of the slidable contact surfaces 41-44, respectively, and the retard-angle grooves 61-64 are provided to the front plate sides of slidable contact surfaces 41-44, respectively. By providing the advance-angle grooves 65-68 and the retard-angle grooves 61-64 diagonally to the slidable contact surfaces 41-44, respectively, the shoes 14-17 can be formed smaller in the circumferential direction. Therefore, pressure chambers 50 can be formed larger in the circumferential direction. Also, the shoes 14-17 can be formed smaller in the axial or radial direction. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
