PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a car shape detecting device and a car washing machine having this device capable of creating car shape data with loss or noise of the data eliminated. SOLUTION: A determination of light transmission/light shielding of the respective optical axes B1-Bn in a vehicle body detecting device 5, is made by a plurality of threshold values S1 and Sh, and a plurality of binary image data determined with respective threshold values are made, and one car shape data is made by synthesizing the plurality of binary image data.
