<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an operation at the side face of a device without adding any operation means on the side face of the device, or generating the deterioration of the reliability of the device. <P>SOLUTION: The touch panel device is provided with: a planar panel body 3 configured by arranging a plurality of transmission electrodes Y1 to Y5 in parallel and a plurality of reception electrodes X1 to X5 in parallel in a grid, and including a protection insulator having a touch face 2 formed on the surface; and a position detection part 4 for detecting a touch position based on the change of the output signals of the electrodes caused by a change in capacitance in response to a touch operation to the touch face.
