PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately perform focusing, regardless of the change in object shape, when performing focusing by using a plurality of focus detection points. SOLUTION: This electronic camera includes an imaging element 2 imaging an object image through an imaging optical system 1 at every predetermined time; a focus detection means 4 to respectively detecting focusing conditions of the imaging optical system 1, based on an output signal from a plurality of photoelectric conversion parts of the imaging element 2 respectively corresponding to a plurality of set focus detection areas; a main object detection means 4 to detect a main object region in an image imaged by the imaging element 2; and a focus detection area control means 4, to set and control the number of focus detection areas, corresponding to the main object area of the latest imaged image to be coordinated with the number of focus detection areas, corresponding to the main object region of the imaged image prior to it, when the size of the main object region detected in the latest imaged image is different from the size of the main object region detected in the imaged image prior to it.
