PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power supply apparatus that responds to a failure report without fail to maintain a secure power supply backup function. SOLUTION: In the power supply apparatus, a DC current is supplied from a power supply/charger 1 to a load device 2 via lines L<SB>+</SB>and L<SB>-</SB>, and a secondary battery 3 is connected in parallel to the lines L<SB>+</SB>and L<SB>-</SB>to provide a backup power source. A switch 101 controlled to be periodically on and off is disposed between the positive power terminal of the power supply/charger 1 and the line L<SB>+</SB>. When the switch 101 is off, a voltage measuring unit 102 measures only the voltage on the lines L<SB>+</SB>and L<SB>-</SB>from the secondary battery 3. Through this voltage measurement, a failure of the secondary battery 3 is detected. A capacitor 11 maintains a power supply voltage to the load device 2 when the switch 101 is turned off.
