PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain a variation in the amount of paper slack formed when feeding the paper. SOLUTION: This paper feeder 1 detects a moving distance of the paper P up to stopping driving of a primary paper feeding part 3 after detecting the tip of the paper P by a register sensor 5 arranged between the primary paper feeding part 3 and a secondary paper feeding part 4 from a photographed image of an area type image sensor 6 arranged on the upstream side in the carrying direction to the primary paper feeding part 3, and controls a carrying quantity by the primary paper feeding part 3 of the next paper fed toward the secondary paper feeding part 4 by using the detected moving distance.
