Multi-pole electrical plug especially for telecommunication cables

A multi-contact plug comprises a rectangular casing 1 enclosing an insulating plate 2 on which are mounted equal numbers of symmetricallyarranged pins 3 and sockets 4. The sockets are accommodated in a raised portion 8 whilst the pins are surrounded by a raised edge 9. A cable entry 5 projects from the side of the casing to the rear of plate 2 and the terminals 7 are accessible by removing a cover 6. The contacts are protected when not in use by a lid 14 of resilient material. The plug is retained in engagement with a similar plug by a latch 13 which engages a detent 12 on the mating plug. Strain on the engaged contacts is prevented by the portions 8 fitting inside the edges 9. Fig. 7 shows a modification wherein the plate 21 carrying the contacts is surrounded by a rubber sealing ring 19, engaged plugs being held together in this case by pivoted bolts carrying nuts 131 engaging forked projections 121. The cover 61 carries ribs 23, 24 on which the protective lid 141 may be snapped when not in use.
