PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device which optimally sets the implementation timing of a recovery action involved in the replacement of an ink cartridge. SOLUTION: The image forming device comprises a recording head which discharges a recording liquid, a cartridge storing the recording liquid and replaceably provided in an image forming device body, and a subtank which supplies the recording liquid supplied from the cartridge to the recording head, detects the usability of the cartridge (S504), detects the condition of the subtank (S502) and judges the appropriateness of the discharge of the recording head (S503). The device controls the discharge of the recording head on the basis of information from the detection of the cartridge and judgment of the appropriateness of the discharge and controls the discharge of the recording head from the appropriateness of use of the cartridge and the condition of the subtank.
