756,735. Filters; purifying liquids; ionexchange. KRETZSCHMAR, A. March 20, 1953, No. 6199/53. Class 46. A cylindrical vessel, of open or closed construction and containing a particulate mass of gravel, or of acid-, iron- or manganese-removing material, or of ion-exchange material, has a conical member centrally and coaxially arranged within it. Expansion of the granules or of the mass as a whole is thus permitted or accelerated. In Fig. 1 filtration or treatment flow proceeds downwardly (as shown by the arrow on the left); expansion of the material 3 may occur upwards into the free space 6. During backwashing (as shown by the arrow on the right) the conicity of the member 4 permits substantial expansion so that rapid and complete discharge of impurities takes place with relatively small quantities of washing water. Used wash water passes through a bell-shaped sludge receptacle 5 and downwardly out of the filter. Regeneration, where necessary, is upward or downward. In Fig. 2 the cone 4 tapers downwardly, filtration or treatment flow is upward, and backwashing or regeneration is upward or downward. The particulate mass 3 in this case is located between filter plates 2 and 7. |
