<p>A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil, a minor proportion of an ester, salt, acyl disulphide or thioanhydride of a thiocarbonic or thiocarbamic acid, or an aliphatic or substituted aliphatic mercaptan, monosulphide or polysulphide or the corresponding selenium compound, and a minor proportion of at least one a -hydrocarbonsubstituted naphthalene. Specified sulphur compounds referred to are zinc di-n-butyldithiocarbamate, zinc isopropylxanthate, zinc sec-amyltrithiocarbonate, zinc t-butyl trithiocarbonate, zinc phenyl-n-butyl dithiocarbamate, butyl di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate, tolyl di-n-butyl-dithiocarbamate, di-benzyltrithiocarbonate, di-i-butyl xanthate, zinc salt of dithiocarbonic acid morpholide, tetramethyl thiuramdisulphide, di-i-propyldixanthogen, di-sec-butyl dixanthogen, sec-butylxanthic thioanhydride and di-i-propylxanthic thioanhydride; dicetyl and cetylethyl sulphide, dioctadecyldisulphide, dicetyltrisulphide, dicetyltetrasulphide, wax disulphide, octyl mercaptan, cetyl mercaptan, dilauryl selenide, dilauryl diselenide, 2, 21-diamino-diethylsulphide, 2, 21-diphenoxydiethylsulphide, di (2-ethylhexyl) sulphide, diethyldithiane, 3, 31-dihydroxy dipropyl disulphide and 3-ethoxy propyl decylsulphide. From 0.03 to 10 per cent of the thiocarbonic acid derivative and from 0.1 to 5 per cent of the aliphatic sulphur compound may be used. The a -hydrocarbon substituted naphthalene may be a -methylnaphthalene, 1-amylnaphthalene 1, 2-diamylnaphthalene, 1-t-butyl naphthalene, 1-octadecylnaphthalene, 1-phenylnaphthalene, di-a -naphthyl, a -benzyl naphthalene, a -cyclohexyl naphthalene, a -(p-butylphenyl) naphthalene and 1, 6-dimethylnaphthalene. From 0.5-10 per cent of the substituted naphthalene may be used. Lubricating oils referred to are highly refined mineral oils e.g., white oil, and synthetic oils such as olefin polymers, e.g., polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polybutenes and polypentenes; polyalkylene glycols, e.g., those derived from 1, 2-propylene oxide, preferably having the terminal hydroxyl groups esterified and/or etherified; diesters, e.g. esters of adipic or sebacic acids with butyl, hexyl or octyl alcohols; silicon-containing oils, such as orthosilicates, e.g. bis (2-butyl) bis (2-ethyl-1-butyl) silicate and iso-propyl-tris-(2-pentyl) silicate, and polysiloxanes such as hexa (2-ethyl-1-butoxy) disiloxane.</p> |
