An obstacle detecting pig for preliminary inspection of a section of a pipeline is disclosed. It travels through the section and determines if there are any restrictions that exceed industry guidelines or might damage other pigs that require the full bore of the pipe. A resiliently deformable disc-shaped detector has a plurality of segments, each operatively connected to a separate device generating an electrical signal. A balast retains the detector segments continuously in the same position relative to a vertical reference plane coincident with the axis of the pipeline to improve the indication of the location of an anomaly circumferentially of the pipeline. In a second embodiment, the detector has the structure of resilient adjacent layers separable from each other upon encountering an obstacle. The components generating the electric signal are fully embedded in the respective layers.
