PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain, for example, a carbon material having a specific surface area of about 200 by a relatively simple method and in a high carbonization yield. SOLUTION: In a trunk part of sugarcane, the bark part being an outer surface side part, except core parts and flesh parts, is separated from the trunk part. The mass of the bark part is 30 mass% or less to the total mass of the trunk part of the sugarcane. Then, the separated bark part is subjected to a carbonization treatment.
