Provided is a high-quality liquid-crystal display device which has a simple structure that does not require a refrigerant cooling mechanism for cooling refrigerant that contributes to cooling, and also provided is a backlight unit. A liquid-crystal display panel (10) and an LED backlight unit (20) arranged on the back surface side of the liquid-crystal display panel (10) are provided. An LED light source (28) which emits LED light toward the surface of the liquid-crystal display panel (10) is arranged in a chassis plate (22) in the LED backlight unit (20), and a cooling air through-flow path (31) which causes the heat accompanying the emission of light from the LED light source (28) to radiate is provided in the chassis plate (22). The through-flow path (31) is provided with: a main duct (311) which introduces cooling air to one side of the liquid-crystal display panel (10); and a branch duct (312) which branches from the main duct (311) and is arranged in the arrangement direction of the LED light source (28). An exhaust port (312a) which discharges the cooling air to outside of the device is formed at the end of the branch duct (312).
