<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an architecture and function of a medium access control (MAC) layer, which supports an enhanced uplink (EU). <P>SOLUTION: A MAC entities for the EU (namely, MAC-e entity) (120, 220, 320) are assembled into a wireless transmitting/receiving unit (WTRU) (100), a node B (200), and a wireless network control device (RNC) (300), respectively. The MAC-e entity (120) of the WTRU processes transmission and retransmission of hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ), priority processing, MAC-e multiplexing, and transport format combination (TFC). The MAC-e entity (220) of a node B processes transmission and retransmission of H-ARQ, E-DCH (102) scheduling, and MAC-e nonmultiplexing.
